One of the key attributes of modernization is the globally interconnected marketplace. The globalization of consumerism allows for companies and their goods to be recognized internationally. The United States (followed by the United Kingdom, Germany, and China) is one of the most culturally influential countries in the world today. It sells its music, clothes, movies, literature, products, and perhaps most recognizably, its fast food, all throughout the world. Companies like McDonald’s and Coca Cola are archetypical examples of this. This globalization is believed to be creating an increasingly homogenous world because Western values and lifestyles sustain the possibility of obliterating countless unique, local cultures that don’t posses the means to market themselves to the rest of the world. Being apart of an interconnected marketplace allows consumers and producers to be aware of the significance and importance of many of the goods that are sold and bought. There is, however, a fine line between the significance of good and their importance. Goods can be incorporated into two categories, the first category being a â€Å"hardware† good (importance). Had the story been set somewhere else, there would not have been such a struggle with Phoenix going to the doctor’s office to receive the medicine she needs for her grandson. The main part of the story is when she is fighting so hard to make it through the long, winding journey through the woods. This is where most of her struggle takes place. The reader really gets an opportunity to see how hard Phoenix’s mission is and to what extent she will go to get to the doctor. It is very clear that Phoenix is poor, uneducated, and very unfortunate. She wears old and worn out clothing, must beg for the ten cents that she needs to purchase a paper windmill for her grandson, has old shoes that she does not know how to tie, and uses an old umbrella as a walking cane. Her grandson is not any more fortunate than she. She most likely comes from a poor and uneducated family and has never seemed to have anything nice or unnecessary. This makes it obvious to the reader that every little thing Phoenix has must have such a great value to her. She must appreciate everything in her life. It does not sound as though Phoenix will be able to make the trip many more times, if even one more time. Her body and mind are both exhausted. When Phoenix reaches the doctor’s office, the nurse is speaking to her and she forgets what she has come to town for. Phoenix’s body is very frail and tired. There were times she fell during her walk through the woods, and her mind continued to go downhill quickly. This is a sure sign that she will not be capable of such things in the future. Phoenix is stubborn, yet a strong woman who will not let anyone or anything stand in her way. Many people could read this story and think less of her for begging and her lack of education and money, but many who read it will feel her pain because it is clear she is hurting terribly both physically and mentally with the challenges she faces. Yet for some, the use of knowledge is to simply push themselves higher above others, naming them inferior or deplorable. So why is it that the mighty may rule the weak in a world of intelligent sanctity? Why is it that those with the answers are in the end, the ones asking themselves if indeed, they are correct any longer, after the ridicule and derision received from a superior? Yet for the sake of argument, let us say that in the end, the knowledgeable overthrow the once superior denizens of ignorance, tear down their walls of false sublimity, and once and for all catapult these mindless drones to the furthest reaches of the known galaxy. So, for all the intelligence shown in past occasions, would these new superiors prove to be as ambiguous as once thought? Would they give credit where credit is deserved? Social agents of mediation ta ke a variety of forms and provide the learner with access to what has been given a variety of names ranging from psychological, to cultural or cognitive tools (Smagorinski). How a human person acts within a given society is dependent on the forms and qualities of interactions available to him as a model. If adequate mediation is provided, learning occurs; if not, learning suffers. This theory then goes on to describe the child and/or learner as limited in his or her ability to acquire knowledge when left on his own. What a child is able to perform when placed in a social setting is almost invariably more than that which he or she is able to do alone, and this additional capability gives the educator an idea of the child's potential (Salomon and Perkins, 1998). This potential (denoted by Vygotsky as the Zone of Proximal Development) cannot be realised, however, unless learning is mediated by another in a social setting. Feuerstein also advocated the theory of mediation in learning. He developed the cognitive map which denotes the dimensions of cognition, and contributed to the mediation theory by formulating an operation that delineates the different stages and participants in the mediation process.
